Government support for education in India runs from school fee waivers
through to research fellowships, and it is split across several ministries
rather than gathered in one place. School-stage help usually comes through
the Department of School Education and Literacy; support beyond Class X is
more often administered by the ministry responsible for the student's
social category.
Almost all of it is means-tested, and the income ceiling is the single most
common reason an application fails. Read the ceiling carefully: some schemes
count the parents' income, some the whole household's, and the figure is
revised from time to time.
