Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)

What is it?

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana provides women from poor households with a clean cooking gas connection, so that cooking need not be done on firewood, coal or cow dung, which fills the house with smoke and damages health.

Under Ujjwala 2.0 the package has three parts, all free: a deposit-free LPG connection (either a 14.2 kg or a 5 kg cylinder), a free first refill, and a free stove (hotplate). The government provides cash assistance of Rs 2,050 for a 14.2 kg connection or Rs 1,300 for a 5 kg connection. This money covers the security deposit for the cylinder, the pressure regulator, the suraksha hose, the consumer card and the installation charges.

The connection must be in the name of a woman. The published condition is that the applicant must be "a woman who has attained 18 years of age". There must be "no other LPG connection from any Oil Marketing Company (OMC) within the same household", and the applicant must belong to a poor household, declared through a deprivation declaration in the application form.

The documents listed are a KYC application form, a copy of Aadhaar, proof of address if it differs from the Aadhaar address, a ration card or a state government document certifying family composition, bank account details, and the deprivation declaration. Applications can be made online through the Indian Oil, Bharat Gas or HP Gas websites, or offline at the nearest LPG distributor.

The scheme is large and still running. As of 26 August 2026, 10,56,80,879 connections had been released in total, including 24,38,098 under the latest extension against a target of 25 lakh. A common misunderstanding: only the first refill is free. Refills after that are bought at the prevailing price, though PMUY consumers receive a separate targeted government subsidy on refills.

How to apply

Once the application is approved, the distributor installs the connection and provides the stove and the free first refill.
