Pragati is a scholarship meant to help girls take up technical education. Many families still hesitate to spend on a daughter's engineering or polytechnic course, and this scheme is designed to remove that excuse by paying a fixed amount every year of the course.

A girl student qualifies if she has been admitted to the first year of a degree or diploma course at an AICTE-approved institution, or has joined the second year through lateral entry. The family's income from all sources must not be more than Rs 8 lakh a year, and you need a valid income certificate from the government to prove it. A maximum of two girl children per family can take this scholarship.

The amount is Rs 50,000 per year for every year of study. This is not just for fees. The official guidelines say it can be used for college fees, and for buying a computer, stationery, books, equipment and software. There is no separate hostel allowance or medical allowance on top of this.

For degree courses, 5,000 scholarships are set aside each year. On top of that quota, all eligible girls from 13 specified Union Territories and North Eastern States get the scholarship. Selection within the quota is on merit, based on the marks in the Class 12 or equivalent examination. If two candidates tie, the Class 10 marks decide, and if there is still a tie the older candidate ranks higher.

The scholarship runs for a maximum of four years if you joined in the first year, or three years if you came in by lateral entry into the second year. You apply online on the National Scholarship Portal once AICTE announces the window; your own institution verifies your application, and then the State or UT Department of Technical Education does a second check.
