Central Sector Umbrella Scheme of Scholarships for Students with Disabilities (SwD Scholarships)

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities runs an umbrella of scholarships for students who have a benchmark disability, which means 40 percent or more disability certified under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. You must have a disability certificate issued by the competent medical authority.

There are three parts. The Pre-Matric Scholarship is for students in Classes IX and X in a government or recognised school. The Post-Matric Scholarship covers Class XI onwards, right through to a Master's degree or diploma, and both full-time and distance education students can apply. Both of these have a parental income ceiling of Rs 2.5 lakh a year. The third part, the Scholarship for Top Class Education, is for postgraduate study at 240 notified institutes and has a higher income ceiling of Rs 8 lakh a year.

Under the Pre-Matric scholarship you get maintenance of Rs 800 a month if you are a hosteller and Rs 500 a month if you are a day scholar, a disability allowance of Rs 4,000 a year for visual or intellectual disabilities and Rs 2,000 a year for other disabilities, and a book allowance of Rs 1,000 a year.

Under the Post-Matric scholarship you get reimbursement of tuition and admission fees up to Rs 1.40 lakh a year, other fees up to Rs 10,000 a year, maintenance of Rs 1,200 a month for hostellers and Rs 650 a month for day scholars, the same disability allowance of Rs 4,000 or Rs 2,000 a year, and a book allowance of Rs 1,500 a year.

A rule people often miss: a maximum of two disabled children in one family can get the scholarship, though if the second child is one of twins then both twins are eligible. You also cannot get a scholarship twice for the same class or year, and you cannot hold two scholarships at once. Applications are made online on the National Scholarship Portal, and the awards are renewed each year when you are promoted.

কীভাবে আবেদন করবেন

Apply online at the National Scholarship Portal, scholarships.gov.in, either as a fresh registration or as a renewal using your previous credentials. When you save the application you receive an Application ID and password, which you need each time you reopen it until final submission. Scanned documents in PDF or JPEG format, each no more than 200KB, must be uploaded. Registration must be completed before midnight on the stated closing date.
