Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN)

What is it?

PM-KISAN is a fully centrally funded income support programme for farming families who own cultivable land. The money arrives as a direct bank transfer, intended to help with the cost of seeds, fertiliser and other farm inputs as well as household needs.

When the scheme began it was limited to families holding up to two hectares, but that ceiling was removed in 2019. Landholding size no longer affects entitlement. What matters is that cultivable land is recorded in the applicant's name and that no member of the family falls into one of the excluded categories.

Payment is automatic once a farmer is verified and enrolled: three instalments a year, roughly every four months, into an Aadhaar-seeded bank account. There is no need to reapply for each instalment.

Potential benefit

Up to ₹6,000 per year

Rs 6,000 per year per family, paid as three equal instalments of Rs 2,000 roughly every four months, directly into a bank account. Potential benefit subject to official approval.

Other conditions stated by the government

• Institutional landholders are not eligible.
• Serving and retired government employees are excluded, except Multi Tasking Staff, Class IV and Group D employees.
• Retired pensioners drawing a monthly pension of Rs 10,000 or more are excluded, with the same exception for Class IV and Group D staff.
• Practising doctors, engineers, lawyers, chartered accountants and architects registered with professional bodies are excluded.
• The benefit is per family. A family means husband, wife and minor children.

How to apply

You can register yourself through the "New Farmer's Registration" link on the PM-KISAN portal, or give your details to the village Patwari, revenue officer or other officer your state has designated. State authorities then verify your land record and add you to the central portal. Once verified, payment flows automatically to your Aadhaar-seeded bank account.
