National Livestock Mission (NLM)

The National Livestock Mission helps people start or grow a livestock business. Instead of only giving animals, it gives a large one-time capital subsidy so that an individual or a group can build a proper unit - a poultry farm, a goat or sheep farm, a piggery, or a feed and fodder plant.

The published subsidy is 50% of the total project cost, with a maximum amount that depends on the activity: up to Rs 25 lakh for rural poultry entrepreneurship, up to Rs 50 lakh for sheep and goat (small ruminant) units, released in two instalments and tiered by unit size, up to Rs 30 lakh for piggery, and up to Rs 50 lakh for feed and fodder units such as hay baling, silage and fodder block making, and up to Rs 50 lakh for fodder seed processing plants.

The mission runs through three sub-missions: breed development of livestock and poultry, feed and fodder development, and research, development, extension and livestock insurance. It is a centrally sponsored scheme with an outlay of Rs 2,300 crore, running since 2014-15 and revised in 2021-22.

The published list of who can apply covers individuals, Self Help Groups, Farmer Producer Organisations, Farmer Cooperative Organisations, Joint Liability Groups and Section 8 companies. Support also goes to State governments for breed improvement infrastructure.

An important point: this is not a loan-free scheme. The published conditions require the applicant to have relevant training or experience, a bank loan sanction with a guarantee, land ownership or a lease, the capacity to run the unit for a minimum of three years, and complete KYC documents. Applications are made online on the NLM portal.

₹10,00,000 – ₹50,00,000 one time capital subsidy

A one-time capital subsidy of 50% of the total project cost. The published ceilings are up to Rs 25 lakh for rural poultry, up to Rs 50 lakh for sheep and goat units (released in two instalments, with tiered amounts from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 50 lakh by unit size), up to Rs 30 lakh for piggery, up to Rs 50 lakh for feed and fodder units such as hay, silage and fodder blocks, and up to Rs 50 lakh for seed processing plants. The remaining 50% is met by the applicant, normally through a sanctioned bank loan.

ఎలా దరఖాస్తు చేయాలి

The applicant submits the application online on the NLM portal at nlm.udyamimitra.in, along with the project proposal and supporting documents. The proposal is examined by the State Implementing Agency and then by the department, and the subsidy is released against a sanctioned bank loan, in instalments for the sheep and goat component.
