PM-YASASVI is an umbrella scheme. That means the government took several older scholarship and hostel schemes for Other Backward Classes, Economically Backward Classes and De-notified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, and put them together under one name so that they are easier to run and easier to find.

It has five parts. There is a Pre-Matric Scholarship, a Post-Matric Scholarship, Top Class School Education, Top Class College Education, and a component for the Construction of Hostels for OBC Boys and Girls.

The scheme is open to OBC, EBC and DNT students whose total annual family income is up to Rs 2.50 lakh. Under the Pre-Matric part, students in Classes IX and X in government schools get an annual academic allowance of Rs 4,000. Under the Post-Matric part, academic allowances range from Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 depending on the category of the course you are studying - so a professional course attracts more than a general degree.

The Top Class components are for a smaller number of high-performing students. School students in Classes 9 to 12 selected under Top Class School Education receive up to Rs 1.25 lakh a year. Top Class College Education gives fuller financial support, covering tuition and living expenses.

The numbers reached are large. In financial year 2023-24 the Pre-Matric component covered 19.86 lakh students and the Post-Matric component covered 27.97 lakh students, while 2,602 students were supported under Top Class Schools and 4,762 under Top Class Colleges. Applications are made online through the National Scholarship Portal, and the school and college components have different closing dates, so check both.

Apply online on the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in under the PM YASASVI scheme, choosing the school or college component that applies to you. Your institution verifies the application and the State or UT department carries out a second level of verification. The Top Class components involve a separate entrance test registration announced by the Department.
