Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G)

VB-G RAM G is the law that now governs guaranteed rural employment in India. It came into force across all rural areas from 1 July 2026, and on that date the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 stood repealed. If someone is looking for MGNREGA, this is the scheme that has taken its place.

The core guarantee has been raised. The Act provides a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment in every financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. Under the old MGNREGA the guarantee was 100 days.

Wages are paid directly into the worker's bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer. The published rule is that wages are to be paid weekly, or in any case within fifteen days from the closure of the muster roll. If payment is late, the worker is due delay compensation at 0.05 percent of the unpaid wages for every day of delay beyond the sixteenth day.

If work is not provided within the time laid down after it is demanded, unemployment allowance becomes payable - not less than one-fourth of the notified wage rate for the first thirty days, and not less than one-half of the notified wage rate for the remaining period, as provided in the Act.

On paperwork, existing MGNREGA job cards that have been e-KYC verified remain valid under VB-G RAM G until the new Gramin Rozgar Guarantee Cards are issued, so households already registered do not need to start again. New households register at the Gram Panchayat level. The scheme is run by the Ministry of Rural Development, with a budget of Rs 95,692.31 crore for FY 2026-27.

A rural household registers at the Gram Panchayat, and is issued a Gramin Rozgar Guarantee Card; households holding an e-KYC verified MGNREGA job card continue to use it until the new card is issued. To get work, an adult member submits a demand for work to the Gram Panchayat. If work is not provided within the period laid down in the Act, unemployment allowance becomes payable. Wages are credited directly to the worker's bank account.
